Controller for an Astronomical Observatory

Our client is a non-profit astronomical observatory currently developing the world's largest telescope. The organization is dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge while fostering relationships among partner countries and their citizens. The company is seeking a Controller to manage its complex financial systems and assist its Business Manager in strategic planning activities and policy development.

Responsibilities: - Oversee accounting operations, financial and tax reporting, payroll and benefits and other such duties as assigned - Establish and monitor operating policies, processes, and systems to ensure that the organization complies with all laws, regulations and accounting standards - Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements. Respond and resolve federal, state and local tax notices - Develop and oversee the operating budget and advise management on financial impact of new initiatives - Oversee and facilitate special financial projects, software upgrades, and financial audits - Lead annual financial statement preparation process, including interfacing with external accountants -Prepare and present financial reports to Board of Directors, Finance Committee, and Audit Committee - Serve as the financial liaison between board members and committee members - Provide support to the Audit Committee - Prepare annual grant proposal and financial reports

Experience: - Bachelor's degree, required - CPA or Master's Degree in accounting, highly preferred - 10+ years in financial management positions - Experience in the education industry, research sector, or with nonprofit organizations, required - Previous supervisory experience and knowledge in accounting, budgeting, and financial analysis, required - Previous corporate industry experience, highly desirable - Ability to design complex financial information systems - Exceptional interpersonal skills and analytical/problem solving skills
