To all fellow Bruins:

Sound Body Sound Mind, which joined forces with UCLA Health in 2015, is the largest community engagement program the UCLA Health System offers. Our program has been fighting the battle against childhood obesity in Los Angeles for the past 20 years with a school-based approach that provides enhanced physical education resources and gets students moving.

To date, we have provided state-of-the-art fitness centers and physical education resources to 127 schools in the Los Angeles area, and at the end of the 2018-19 school year, 10 more schools will be added to that list. Annually, we impact more than 180,000 middle and high school students. To learn more about our program and impact CLICK HERE!

A staggering 42% of children in Los Angeles are obese or overweight, with a majority of these children living in under-resourced communities. Seventy-eight percent of the students who attend SBSM-supported schools qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, an indicator of high economic need. Sadly, an overwhelming number of the students impacted annually by SBSM would not have these resources without our program.

With these alarming and unfortunate statistics, we are asking you to please consider supporting our cause of improving the health and wellness of Los Angeles’ youth. More schools need our program, especially in those communities that so desperately lack opportunities for students to be active.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Charles Viana
