Description: Our client is a leading charter school organization dedicated to transforming the face of public education in historically under-served areas. They are known for providing an empowering support network, innovative and customized teaching methods, and outreach. They are seeking an Assistant Controller to fulfill the role of ensuring timely and accurate reporting of financial information, free from material misstatement. The Assistant Controller will work to improve processes and tools to produce actionable, timely, and accurate financial statements. Our client’s department is entering an exciting era of growth and seeks a dynamic individual who enjoys the challenge of charting the path for the future. Responsibilities:
- Be an active leader in implementing an ERP finance system
- Lead the team to close the books timely
- Motivate the general ledger accounting team
- Oversee the planning, scheduling, and work related to the financial audit/school-site audit visits
- Ensure the financial statement audit is completed on time/free from material misstatement
- Ensure accountant analyze all balance sheet accounts monthly
- Prepare annual information tax returns for review and approval
- Act as a thought-partner in designing reports and general ledger to support national expansion and consolidation
- Review and post journal entries
- Create new general ledger accounts and ensure they are consistent with financial reporting requirements, and appear in financial reports
- Ensure the mechanics of financial reports, both internal and external, are working correctly
- Design new report templates
- Work with schools, departments, and accountants to ensure compliance with internal controls
Qualifications:
- Minimum 6 years work experience, including 3-4 years in general accounting, nonprofit experience highly preferred
- CPA is highly preferred
- Multi-state experience highly preferred
- Experience managing teams
- Knowledge and/or interest in charter school operations and federal/state funding regulations is a plus
- Experience with federal audits is a plus
- Detail oriented, efficient and accurate
- Desire to work an education reform organization
- Ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects while maintaining a firm grasp of individual project details
