Join us for our January meeting as we host Mary Luévano, who will be discussing the effects of Climate Change at our new location, BlankSpaces.

Ms. Luévano is a consultant with expertise in clean energy, green building, climate and sustainability policy.  She most recently worked in clean energy finance at Renew Financial, whose founder created the PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) business model which Scientific American magazine named as “one of the top 20 ideas that can change the world.”

Previously Ms. Luévano spent 18 years at Global Green USA, the global environmental organization founded by Mikhail S. Gorbachev and Diane Meyer Simon.  Ms. Luévano oversaw policy and legislative initiatives related to green building, clean energy and climate change in her 15 years as Policy and Legislative Director.  Subsequently she was named as Interim Executive Director and later, Vice President.  Much of her work at Global Green focused on the needs of low-income communities where she crafted policies that engaged new constituencies in the fight against climate change.

Prior to joining Global Green, Ms. Luévano worked for 8 years as a Congressional staffer serving in the offices of  US Senator Alan Cranston, US Reps. Augustus Hawkins, Calvin Dooley and Jane Harman where she worked on a range of issues including environment, defense technology, small business and tax matters.

In addition to her work as a Congressional staffer, Ms. Luévano has a long history of volunteer public service.  In 2015 she was appointed by CA Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins to serve on the California Coastal Commission which oversees all development along 1100 miles of the California coastline.  In that capacity, she also served as the Coastal Commission’s representative on the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Board.  In 2004, Ms Luevano was appointed by Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn to serve on the City of LA’s Recreation and Parks Board of Commissioners where she was elected Vice President.  In her Rec and Parks Commission role she served as the alternate representative to the LA Coliseum Commission.  Ms. Luévano served for three years (one as President) on the City of LA’s Environmental Affairs Commission.  She has also served on the UCLA Alumni Association Board of Directors as Chair of the Government Relations Alumni Advocacy Committee and as a volunteer advocate with UCLA Government and Community Relations for over 20 years.  Ms. Luévano holds a Bachelors Degree in Political Science/International Relations from UCLA and has completed the Congressional Research Service’s Graduate Legislative Institute in Washington, DC.
