Launching (and Succeeding?) at an Entertainment Startup during the Pandemic 

Peter Shiao started started his 2020 as many did – full of hopes and plans. This was the year he would launch Immortal Studios – an independent content studio focused on the martial arts-fantasy genre known as Wuxia – with money from bold-faced investors atop prominent public stages. By March, every plan he made would be obliterated by a new, starker reality: all the investment gone and no more public events. He used that opportunity to work cheaper and faster, and launched anyway. Seven months later, he and his team have built the foundation of a digital native studio that is writing their own playbook to “Awaken the Hero in everyone.”  

 About the Speaker

Peter Shiao (UCLA political science 1990) is a serial entrepreneur whose career has been at the intersection of the East and West across entertainment, media, technology, politics and culture. He founded and chaired the US-China Film Summit, founded the first Hollywood-China entertainment fund, and produced the first ever US-China movie co-production. From 2014-2018, he founded the California-China Initiative in partnership with California Governor Jerry Brown, the Milken Institute and the LA Times to implement the California-China cross industrial collaboration across seven industrial sectors. He was also responsible for the international content efforts of the Shaolin Temple, the birthplace of Kung Fu, across all media verticals.
