Angel Funding, It's More Than the Money:  When, Where, and How?

A panel of Pasadena Angels members join BP Pasadena to discuss how Angel investors bring money and value to qualified early-stage companies and contribute to our economy. 

The Pasadena Angels are committed to helping forward-thinking innovators, creators and entrepreneurs with the mentorship and funding to fuel success. They offer early-stage companies an opportunity to harness the insights and experience of more than a 100 successful entrepreneurs, senior executives, technologists and skilled professionals from a diverse set of industries.

About the Speakers

Bruce Lanthrop is a member and past board member of Pasadena Angels, a group of individual angel investors in Pasadena and is president and co-founder of MADIA Tech Launch Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation supporting entrepreneurs in San Gabriel Valley. Bruce is also an attorney at Lubka & White LLP in Monrovia, California, with a practice focused on intellectual property (including patents), licensing, corporate law, government contracts and grants (including SBIR awards), and dispute resolution. He represents software and technology start-ups and established companies that are focused on commercializing a variety of technologies, including augmented reality, electric aircraft, carbon capture, internet of things, medical laboratory testing, and telemedicine applications software.

Bruce is a registered patent attorney and received his law degree from the University of Southern California and his engineering degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, where his upper division coursework focused on biomedical engineering, ergonomics, user interface design, and man-machine systems.

Jim Schaefer, CPA, MBA is managing partner of Mark Schaefer Associates, a boutique CPA firm with a specialty in early stage technology and fast growth companies.  He advises entrepreneurs, CEO’s and managers on financial issues including business funding, financial plans and projections, business valuations, mergers and acquisitions and management information systems. Jim’s special emphasis is in business strategies for increasing revenue, controlling costs and managing financial matters. Jim is a founding member, past secretary and current treasurer of Pasadena Angels, a 100 member angel investment group.  Jim currently serves on the Board of MADIA Tech Launch that promotes the region’s technical, scientific and industrial workforce.  

Jim has a BA in Economics from UCLA and an MBA from USC. He has taught Advanced Entrepreneurship to graduate engineering students at Cal State Long Beach and accounting and finance at University of La Verne.  Most recently he created and taught the class on “Financial Tools for Business Growth” through UCLA Extension.

Mimi Carter is Director of the Pasadena Angels named one of the top 10 angel investing groups in the US by Forbes Magazine, CB Insights, and Angel Research Institute. She is a partner at Carterus Strategies, an entrepreneur, and investor in early-stage companies. Mimi serves on the advisory board for Mayor Eric Garcetti’s WiSTEM program, an initiative to lead the nation in developing and sustaining a robust pipeline of women in STEM. She is also a strategic advisor for Women Founder’s Foundation, an organization providing access to capital, visibility, and mentorship for female founders. Mimi started her career in the pharmaceutical industry working for Bayer and Allergan after graduating from UC Irvine with a degree in Biology.
