About the Speaker

Richard Oberreiter is a proud 1984 UCLA graduate and southern California native. While at UCLA he was in NROTC and accepted a commission in the US Navy upon graduation. Subsequently, he served on cruisers and frigates in the Pacific and had the privilege of being an exchange officer with the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force. 

Richard is a licensed attorney in California, although since 1999 he has primarily worked as the COO or CEO at three medical device start-ups all in Orange County. In December 2020, he took on the position of Managing Executive for the new Hamamatsu Photonics Innovation Center and Venture Capital Fund in Irvine. In 2019, Mr. Oberreiter was asked by the commanding general of California State Guard to head up the new Strategic Communications unit that had been formed to help educate the public and government leaders of California about the mission of the CSG. Today, he is the Director of Strategic Planning and Policy for the CSG.  

Mr. Oberreiter is married to Shelli Black (fellow Bruin), an attorney, and he has two daughters, one at UCLA and the other daughter is a senior at the other school.
