Alice Kao is the founder and CEO of Sender One, one of Southern California’s leading indoor climbing gym networks. Kao developed a passion for climbing during her early professional career, and recognized a gap in the local climbing scene. Alongside her husband Wes Shih and co-founder Wes Chu, Kao launched Sender One in 2013. What began as a single gym in Santa Ana has grown into a multi-location enterprise across Los Angeles and Orange County, known not just for scale and design but for its emphasis on inclusivity and community. Kao views climbing less as an elite sport and more as a shared space for connection—a “church” where people find belonging. Her leadership reflects her own journey: building spaces where people who once felt like outsiders can discover confidence, community, and strength.
